The Black Research Network (BRN) has been spotlighting student research on its website with stories about Black student and post-doctoral fellow success.
Featured is Brianna Lane, one of five students awarded the Black Graduate Scholar Award in Geography and Planning in 2022. Lane, who recently graduated from the physical geography program at U of T, was monitoring lake ice and snow in the Central Canadian High Arctic in Nunavut, looking at developing an accessible method for snow and ice data quantification. Her research will provide insight into the historical changes in the region, with climate data from 1953 to the present day.
The award is a partnership between the BRN and the university’s tri-campus Graduate Department of Geography and Planning that recognizes the exceptional academic and professional achievements of Black graduate students.
The launch of the BRN responds to the recommendations set out by the University of Toronto’s Anti-Black Racism Task Force to address anti-Black racism and promote Black inclusion and excellence within the University of Toronto tri-campus community.
