Students push the boundaries of research and innovation: Groundbreakers S2 Ep.4

From launching rovers into space to exploring whether green cannabinoids can treat epilepsy in children, students at the University of Toronto are taking research and innovation in bold new directions.

In Ep. 4 of the Groundbreakers video series, host Ainka Jess goes behind the scenes with student researchers from the Robotics Institute and Medicine by Design strategic initiatives, as well as the Black Founders Network.

Some of their work is literally out of this world.

“I think as humans we are very curious creatures and I see planetary robots as a way to extend our reach in the solar system, so I’m actually really excited about what these rovers can do in the future,” says Olivier Lamarre, a PhD candidate in planetary robotics at U of T’s STARS Laboratory.

The episode also features Kareem Abdur-Rashid and Kamaluddin Abdur-Rashid – both alumni of U of T and co-founders and co-directors of Kare Chemical Technologies – and Justine Bajohr, a PhD candidate in the lab of Maryam Faiz, an assistant professor in the department of surgery in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine.

Groundbreakers is a multimedia series that includes articles at U of T News and features research leaders involved with U of T’s Institutional Strategic Initiatives, whose work will transform lives.
