About BSMI: BSMI was launched with seed-funding from the U of T ISI Stage I program in January 2025, and is led by Rasoul Yousefpour (Daniels), and co-lead by Shashi Kant (UTM), Tamer El-Diraby (Engineering), and Rob Gillezeau (Rotman). The initiative is dedicated to the sustainable management of natural resources with the goal of creating a viable economy for bio-based practices and services focused on the softwood and forest biomass industry.

The initiative has three broad research areas:
1) State of the forest biomass and soft lumber industry
2) Transformation of the Canadian economy
3) Prioritizing sustainable communities

Work to date: Since January, the team has been building connections and holding consultations with collaborators and community groups to gauge interest in and gain insights towards developing the BSMI work areas, including a BSMI Strategy Workshop that was held in June.
