About BSMI: BSMI was launched with seed-funding from the U of T ISI Stage I program in January 2025, and is led by Professor Rasoul Yousefpour, and co-lead by Professors Shashi Kant, Tamer El-Diraby, and Rob Gillezeau. The initiative is dedicated to the sustainable management of natural resources with the goal of creating a viable economy for bio-based practices and services focused on the softwood and forest biomass industry. Since January 2025, the team has been building connections and holding consultations with collaborators and community groups to gauge interest in and gain insights towards developing the BSMI work areas, including a BSMI Strategy Workshop that was held in June.
About MTI: MTI is based at the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design (DFALD) at the University of Toronto. Led by Professor Rasoul Yousefpour, and founded by Professors Anne Koven and Rob Wright, the Institute aims to help position Canada as a global leader in sustainable mass timber research, education, development, and export by leveraging relationships between educators, researchers, industry, and Indigenous groups across Canada and internationally.
