Bioeconomy and Sustainable Materials Institute (BSMI)

The Bioeconomy and Sustainable Materials Institute (BSMI) is dedicated to the sustainable management of natural resources with the goal of creating a viable economy for sustainable bio-based practices and services. The bioeconomy approach is centered on natural resources harmonizing human activities, industrial decisions, and public policy with the preservation and promotion of sustainable ecological systems.

BSMI will advance multi- and inter-disciplinary research in bioeconomy, build decision frameworks to exploit the advantages of sustainable natural resources, study policy options that can enhance Canadian competitiveness in the green economy, examine cross-industry business models that enable private enterprises to innovate and deliver new value to consumers and the community at large, and build change making scenarios that enable new, effective work processes and practices.

A key mission of the Institute is to engage researchers, communities, industry, and the public sector to co-create ecologically-sound, community-driven solutions to realize the bioeconomy as means to critical societal challenges such as climate resilience, food and energy security, and the overall well-being of communities. By integrating diverse disciplines and engaging with various societal actors, BSMI aims to develop solutions that are not only scientifically sound but also socially equitable and environmentally sustainable. This holistic approach will help Canada transition to a more sustainable and resilient economy, addressing both current and future challenges.
